In this episode of the Stress-in-Action podcast Stress navigation, Susanne Scheibe and her host Marcos Ross Adelmann discuss various aspects of a healthy work life: human-centered work, demands and resources, and ageing in the workplace.
In organisations, culture plays a major role: a competitive culture can add extra stress, while a collaborative culture can be protective. Susanne emphasises the importance of human-centered work, which takes into account basic needs such as competence, autonomy, and social connection.
Additionally we discuss job demands and job resources. Job demands are aspects of work that require energy, such as emotional labour in healthcare or education. Demands are increasing because of the technological developments and increased work flexibility. Susanne explains: "We are constantly connected, (…) and that makes it really hard to recover, from stress, from work stress, and all work demands." Job resources are elements that help employees cope with these demands, like support from colleagues. Emotional job demands can be both taxing and rewarding, depending on the context and the level of social support.
A third topic that is discussed is ageing at work. Susanne advocates for recognising the value of older workers and combating negative stereotypes. Older employees are often better at regulating emotions and handling stress, but they sometimes face ageism.
